Popular video-sharing platform YouTube has launched a new short-video creator. The new platform is called YouTube Shorts. It is available in India only. This comes in the wake of the government’s decision to ban the hugely popular Chinese app TikTok. The launch of YouTube Shorts is aimed at countering TikTok’s popularity. YouTube said that it will test a beta version of YouTube Shorts before rolling out to all. The platform will allow users to create 15-second videos. The platform will feature tools similar to TikTok. The videos can be set to music just like TikTok. India was TikTok’s biggest foreign market. There were 120 million active users on the platform.

TikTok was banned in India by the government in June. The decision was taken amid simmering border tensions between India and China. The two Asian giants are engaged in a border standoff since April. For YouTube, it will not be an easy task to fill the gap created after TikTok’s ban. The platform will face competition with many local competitors that are in the market to capture the space. YouTube said that it will try to attract maximum users with interesting features. The company has rolled out the beta version on Android. There is a plan in place to launch the same on iOS.

TikTok is owned by Chinese multinational ByteDance. It is also facing a ban threat in the United States. The Trump administration has asked ByteDance to sell its operations or face a ban. The administration has cited national security concerns behind its decision. The government has even alleged that TikTok compromised with the users’ data. India too in June cited similar concerns before banning ban it. Alone in the US, TikTok has over 110 million users. There are reports that Oracle has won the deal to take over TikTok’s business in the United States. It is yet not clear when YouTube will introduce YouTube Shorts in other countries, including the United States.
